Background of the Study
Malaria remains a major public health challenge in Nigeria, with Sokoto State experiencing a high burden of the disease due to environmental and socio-economic factors. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2024) emphasizes the role of preventive education in malaria control, particularly in regions with endemic transmission. Malaria prevention education programs aim to inform communities about vector control measures, early diagnosis, and effective treatment to reduce disease prevalence and mortality rates (Federal Ministry of Health, 2024).
In Sokoto State, several malaria prevention education initiatives have been implemented through government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and international health bodies. These programs focus on promoting the use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), indoor residual spraying, and early medical intervention (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2024). However, the effectiveness of these educational interventions remains a concern, as malaria prevalence remains high in many rural and peri-urban communities. Factors such as poor literacy levels, cultural beliefs, and inadequate dissemination of information may limit the impact of these programs (Ibrahim & Bello, 2024).
This study evaluates the effectiveness of malaria prevention education programs in Sokoto State, assessing their reach, impact, and potential areas for improvement.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the implementation of malaria prevention education programs in Sokoto State, malaria continues to be a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, particularly among children and pregnant women (Bello & Yusuf, 2023). Challenges such as inadequate community engagement, low levels of awareness, and limited access to preventive tools hinder the success of these initiatives (Ogunbanjo & Salami, 2024).
While government-led campaigns and NGO interventions have made efforts to educate residents on malaria prevention strategies, gaps in knowledge and behavioral change persist. This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of malaria prevention education programs in reducing malaria prevalence and to recommend strategies for enhancing their impact.
